The Book of Negroes is the first video in the 1783 Collection and tells the story of former slaves who escaped their enslavers during the American Revolutionary War and were promised freedom, land, and opportunity after the war. Their names were recorded in the historical document called The Book of Negroes. The song played by Juno nominated saxophonist, Jesse Ryan, and featured in this video is Lift Every Voice and Sing by James Weldon Johnson. Narration by Brainerd Blyden-Tayler.
